to deal with PUGs, Overlay and balance-bitching
Published on October 25, 2009 By ogham In Demigod

So now I sat in the lobby for like an hour today jumping from host to host because no one could ever get a game together.  Thanks OVERLAY!  Now that everyone sees all the stats, they want to balance teams.

So, the solution - AUTO-BALANCE.

Can you guys implement an auto-balance button for the host?  I don't have the specs, shouldn't be hard to come up with though.  Just base it averages of total games played plus overall wins.

Agreed. It wouldn't be perfectly accurate but at least a step in the right direction.

I think this feature is supposedly in Panth, or was it Skirmish.  Anyhow if there were enough people, an automatch based on stats would be viable.

Signed!

Played a couple of 5v5 games today. Those need to have autobalance.

Autobalance already exists, it's called pantheon. It just doesn't work since the sides are split up for no good reason.

Split up for a logical reason, but its a reason that negates autobalance.  Anyway, I have't seen any comment from SD on autobalance/skirmish mode lately.

But wouldn't that trade us the Panth for a resurrected Skirmish mode?

if more people would just play pantheon, everything would be fine.  It's not busted because the sides are split.  It's busted because there just aren't enough people using it.  According to opengames.asp there are 1494 people online and not a single person in queue for pantheon.

Let's launch a campaign to get more people playing pantheon!

It might work out quite well if people start using it.

If the purpose of Pantheon is to pit players against each other to fight for the forces of light and dark, then it is failing.

If it doesn't work anyway (and it doesn't) then there's no real loss.

That won't work. I seriously doubt a significant portion of those 1500 people actually read the forums enough (if at all) to get interested in that kind of effort, the system itself needs to just work on its own.

wat happened to all the premade ragers...?

I like this idea.

A lot.

Let me think about how it might be implemented.

Honestly Frogboy I'd be happier about the idea of auto-balancing for lobbies if lobbies offered the map selection variety of the Pantheon setup. One of the strongest lures of the pantheon is the variety, so it'll be disappointing if mimmicking what seems like key functionality of the matchmaking (auto-balance) further diminishes the playerbase interested in it.

That being said, I can see several reasons why throwing your chips in with pantheon is a bad idea:

  • custom lobbies will improve players' odds of stable connectivity
  • players can avoid known griefers
  • players can pick the map and game type they want
  • custom games already have the lion's share of the playerbase so improving it seems like the best use of resources.
  • reduced chance of doubles without the light/dark disctinction

Obviously I don't call the shots, but I strongly disagree with a further reduction of auto-matching, I just think most people play themselves into a rut with the ceaseless Cataract showdowns and that ultimately this kind of tool is just another anti-premade measure.

It's going to be even harder to play with friends, currently if you at least join a 3v3 or 4v4 with friends people will sometimes let it slide. With this feature it'll be impossible.

I just don't understand why more resources would be directed into turning custom lobbies into a game type that was already removed (skirmish).

The game needs a working rating system first before an auto balance system can be implemented.  If it sorts players by win%, there would be problems if someone with only 20 games and 40% wins was sorted as a better player than someone with 500 games and 35% wins.

I'm glad to see you post on this topic.  Here is EXACTLY, based on the community, how i'd implement auto-balances: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/367329.  Short version - skrimish is back.

I have always been confused on this point.  What is the logical reason for light v. dark?  I thought only one DG can ascend to godhood.  So why the team games in Pantheon?  Shouldn't every DG be trying to kill the other DG?
